Is De-personalizing your home necessary to Sell Your Home?

Is De-personalizing your home necessary to Sell Your Home?

It has been a long standing recommendation from agents, certainly from staging professionals, to their selling clients, to de-personalize (family photos). The thought has been to “stage” the home for buyers to see themselves living there and not that it is someone’s home.

But does it make a difference?

Is the answer to this is as varied as there are buyers?  In some cases, too many family photos can be a distraction as much “over decorated”, poor paint choices, too much furniture, or clutter. But the biggest distraction is that the home is not clean.

When taking buying clients on showings I ask their opinion after the tour. Their comments have been more to the finishes and cleanliness.

So just as in life, moderation is the key. Well arranged furniture, neutral paint, no clutter, and a touch of well placed family photos can endear a home. But the one area to over-do, clean, clean, clean.
Best advice, hear your professional’s recommendation and apply what you can. The idea is to stage your home to appeal to the most people, Show off the benefits, and keep in mind, you want someone else to call this Home (quickly and for the most money).
